Every year Marietta College recognizes two outgoing members of the Greek community for their commitment and dedication to their fraternity or sorority.

The winners of the 2012 Greek Man & Woman of the year awards are Delta Tau Delta’s Ryan Nolen ’12 (Belpre, Ohio) and Sigma Kappa’s Rachel Baughman ’12 (Kent, Ohio).

Baughman didn’t plan on getting involved in Greek Life coming in as a freshman, but was immediately drawn to Sigma Kappa.

“From the moment I entered the house, never have I felt more comfortable or welcome around a group of girls,” she said.

Baughman has had her fair share of campus and community involvement. She was heavily involved in the McDonough Leadership Program, including serving as an EXCEL leader and coordinator, and on the McDonough Student Advisory Committee. She’s held leadership positions in Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society, and Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education.

“Greek Life has completely shaped my Marietta College experience and I know that I am a better person because I am a Sigma Kappa,” Baughman said. “I will always hold the Sigma Kappa values close to my heart and will use them to guide me on all of life’s adventures.

Nolen, the Student Senate President in 2011-12, has also held leadership positions at Marietta. Nolen has served in the McDonough Leadership program as an EXCEL leader and has been an orientation leader for two years. He also delivered the runner-up Jewett Oration at Commencement.

“Delts embody excellence,” Nolen said. “I knew I wanted to be a Delt as soon as orientation was over my freshman year when I realized that the guy who moved all of my stuff into my room, my RA, my McDonough EXCEL Leader, and the student body president were all Delts. I loved how passionate the Delts were about campus involvement, and really making a difference in their community.”

Both winners expressed an extreme amount of gratitude for the award, and for how Greek Life has helped them develop as individuals.

“The Greek community at Marietta College is made up of phenomenal men and women who achieve incredible things and to be chosen from such a pool of exemplary people is one of the highest honors I could imagine,” Baughman said.

Jacob Tidwell, Assistant Director of Student Activities & Greek Life, is pleased to add two more outstanding individuals to his list of award winners.

“From the moment those two came to Marietta, they’ve been involved. They’ve shown a huge level of involvement all around campus,” Tidwell said. “Even faculty who had never had them as students are able to speak highly about them. They’re both good students and good people.”
